Zoar United Methodist Church says Thank YOU! The Zoar United Methodist Church hosted their 10th annual Live Drive thru Nativity last Sunday evening. We are very fortunate to have members from the entire surrounding area and many other churches come together for this great story. Our deepest Thanks go out to Leah Crawford and Helen Lang who worked countless hours in preparing for this year and packing away for next year with a great deal of organization already in place for next year. We couldn't have begun to accomplish this FREE event without almost 150 fellow church members and members of the community who assembled the displays and participated in the scenes. We offer a tremendous amount of Thanks to you, the visitors who make it worth the time and effort each year. This year we enjoyed over 1300 visitors in the 2 1/2 hour period. We also give Thanks to the Holy one that made this entirely possible and allows us all the opportunity to say Merry CHRISTmas to you. Bob Cline - Zoar United Methodist Church

This is my comment on the town council issue of vehicle purchases. I personally feel whats the purpose of buying the pickup. They have SUVs if they need to haul anything. I feel the town is spending our money on their wants, not their needs. Its a waste! I congratulate the officiers on a job well done the few past years for the safety and protection they provide. But, buying a truck for them isn't an neccesity. Everyone from the mayor to every member on the council needs to beaware and notify of anything that has to do with the town budget. That way a wiser decision would be made. Leaving the decision to the mayor and one or two people will lead to something bad for the town budget. Too many times things have been decide behind closed doors or covered up with dirt. We, the citizens of Cheraw, council members and all need to beaware of all things concerning the town budget. I think it should be made public by local newspaper, not just at town meetings.

My mother recently needed the services of the ER at CGH and I would like to share my thoughts as a family member and a nurse of the care she received during her 5 day hospitalization. We were greeted by a smile from Rena, pat.rep, who checked us in and was so kind. Chris, ER RN, quickly evaluated my mother and prepared her for an exam by Dr. Davis, the physician in the ER who is also her family doctor. During her time in the ER Chris, RN was attentive to her needs and thorough in his care. Dr. Davis knowing my mother's recent health issues, did a complete work-up and discussed with us the need for inpatient treatment. He had several patients in attendance and answered our questions and concerns with patience and compassion. Having worked in several ER's I know how long the wait can be during the tests and then waiting for transfer to a room. I was impressed with the time from "door to floor". When we arrived to the medical/surgical unit we began a 5 day journey of nursing care by staff that were professional, kind and caring. Having been a RN for over 25 years I have watched how the patients in the hospital today have more medical needs, there is more paperwork, and the nurse-to-patient ratio is too high for a nurse today to give the quality care they all desire to give. In spite of this challenge each person responded to our requests as quickly as possible. Gratefully I was able to stay with my mother and assist the staff in providing nursing care to her. I would like to acknowledge the following nursing staff: Veronica, RN, Kristy, CNA, Tasha, LPN, Madelyn, RN, Carter, PCT, Latoya, PCT, Monica, RN, Sherry B., LPN, Joy, RN, Nezzie, PCT, Diane R., RN, Beverly, RN, Tabitha, CNA, April, RN, Amanda, PCT, Laurenza, RN, Joann, PCT, Angela, LPN, Dory, LPN, Nina, RN Surgical Services, Joanie, RN and Kelly, RN. These additional staff members also contributed to my mother's care: Sally, Housekeeping, Terry, Maintenance, Sara Bozarth, Volunteer, Gale Creech, Senior Circle, Andrea, Unit Secretary, John, Housekeeping, and Jordan, Phlebotomy. There were also other staff from surgery and lab that did not introduce themselves but helped too. We were quite impressed with Dr. McLeod who was on call for Dr. Davis when he came in and gave my mother a very thorough examination and coordinated her care for the night. As always we received excellent care from Dr. Ghorra who has seen my mother through several surgical procedures. His compassion and gentle spirit complement his skills. And of course, Dr. Davis who was honest in his opinion, respectful of our spiritual beliefs and listened to our needs. He continues to provide her and my father with compassionate medical care. Why did we choose CGH? The staff and doctors that care about our community! Is it perfect? No, there are always some employees that do not shine, but overall I believe that my mother received the quality patient care that I strive to give my patients. Thanks CGH! We appreciate you all!!! Dottie Campbell, RN

Please tell the Mrs. Dayna Stevens (Finley's-the 3 yr old diagnosed with cancer- mom) that Richland memorial Hospital might be a bad idea, because I had a cyst on my brain and they wanted to cut the whole right side of my head off, just to puncture it. It was trapping my spinal fluid. We went to Charleston and they did a small incision and now I'm well. I'm not trying to recommend anything bad, but Charleston is voted the best hospital in sc. May God bless Finley Stevens. I hope everything will be okay!!

This (8/18/09) may be the only time that I will agree with Robert Monnie's column on the Letters to Editor page. I hope John Spratt takes him up on the offer!

In March of this year, I started the process of exponging my criminal record. The expongment was finally filed August 24th. There are almost too many people to thank for their time, support, patience and guidance. To all of you that signed character affidavits, you will never be forgotten. Thanks to the solicitor's office, Mr. Rogers, Kimberely Atkinson and Brandy Cole. Mr. Burnie Ballard you are appreciated for being a legal compass. To Ben Cook, you are a true friend and I salute you. To the Honorable Paul Burch thank you for a new lease on life. Damian, Chaynce and Jerry thanks for all the motivation. The staff of Sutton Baumgartner Funeral Home thank you all. If I left anyone out all apologies. Thanks for you support through one of the most stressful times in my life. God Bless.

Isn't it great that we live in a country where we allow convicted felons to have their letters to the editor published? I think Mr. Leviner may be the first convicted criminal in history to feel that the sentence he received was too harsh. In my opinion, and I'm sure the bank tellers he terrorized will agree, 18 years isn't long enough. Mr. Joyner and the Cheraw Police should be commended for their efforts in removing a dangerous bank robber from our streets.

On behalf of the Summerville High School Basketball team, I want to thank Coach Jimmy Weatherford, Coach Nelson Hendrick of Chesterfield High School, the fine folks from Farm Bureau, and all of the volunteers who helped hosting the Farm Bureau Classic Basketball Tournament! We have traveled to many tournaments in-state and out of state, but we have never been treated any better than at Chesterfield High School. The tournament is a first class event and the hospitality was outstanding by everyone connected with the tournament. We appreciate the invitation and will be sure to spread the word to other teams looking for a great Christmeas Tournamnent. Sincerely, Greg Elliott, Head Coach Summerville High School

Maybe no one knows, or maybe no one cares, but I will say this. Is South Carolina just so backwards, or is it perfectly acceptable to have a Baptist church group meet in our public school? This does not sit well with me. The Cheraw Intermediate School, operates as part of the Chesterfield County School District, which in turn operates under the State of South Carolina. I understand that religion is not being forced down the throat of the students at the school as the church meets on Sundays, yet this, I feel, is in direct violation of the separation of church and state. Mr. Chad Vick is the relative of Representative Ted Vick, and serves as a member of the Chesterfield County School Board, so there is no doubt that he has the ability to pull the necessary strings. I have two questions, 1) What would happen if a Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or Buddhist group that had no political pull, wished to meet in the halls of our school system? and 2)Aren't our schools a path to learning, tolerance, and socialization? What message is being sent to the students and families of the school? I feel that this undermines the principle values of a successful school. Keep your religion to your churches, and private schools, don't preach in our hallways!

I would like to know why it is ok for a church to hold SUnday Praise services at CIS??? Is it becaus there is exceptions made to the School Board President. Because not so long ago a mainly African American church aske to do the SAME thing and were told they are not allowed to hold Sunday Srvices in the school buildings. Just wondering what was up with the double standards.

What a wonderfully written column by Ms. Oliver on education opportunities today. Very fresh and informative. I also enjoyed my time at NETC and will consider the FMU program she mentioned through NETC.

Tackling Higher Education is a great article. The football metaphor was neat, especially since the saint's just won the superbowl. Kudos to the writer and all associated with the local college she cheers for.

The article written by Denise Oliver "Tackling Higher Education" was a great article. I am an alumni of NETC and currently a faculty member at the college. Denise was actually a student of mine during her tenure at NETC. The article really made me realize that at some point in your teaching career you may impact someone's life and that is what makes my job worthwhile.

I really enjoyed the article, Channeling Gandhi in last week's edition written by Denise Oliver. Another great job! Being a resident of Mt. Croghan, I must say that all that was written was true.

Check out the "Mother of the Year Nominations Sought" article (mid-right)...I'm guessing the committee is made up of 65 year old white women from 1847 (who of course got their husband's permission to form a committee). Wow.

Great paper. I thought with all the pages in this past weeks issue that chick that wrote about the super bowl and NETC would have something in ot but it was just graduation. She is pretty funny and great. Bring her back soon. I been looking at the paper every Tuesday just for her.

In reference to the article about the animal abuse by Mr Gerald Rhynes, why would a pasture need hay and feed in the summertime? The horses eat the grass in the pasture don't they? From what I understand the grass was up to your knees. Had the horses been wormed? Were the horses old? Did anyone with any agricultural experience or just common horse sense investigate the situation?

The letter to the editor Aug 3 from Robert L. John has us shaking our heads. Spratt has voted to triple the deficit, take over the health industry, destroy jobs through a misguided cap and trade scheme, avoid passing a budget, and Mr. John is worried about where 9-10 year old children of a candidate go to school??? He's kidding, right? We'll vote based on substantive issues and records, thanks.

Amen and Bravo to Glenn Gulledge's Letter to the Editor in the August 10,2010 issue in response to a prior letter touting the virtues of Congressman Spratt. The platform for the current powers that be in Washington was all about "time for a change", well it's urgently past time for a change in the fifth district! Well said Glenn!
