Wreck and fire west of Pageland

A terrible wreck on Highway 9 at Dudley Road this morning claimed two lives and resulted in a third person being airlifted to CMC Main in Charlotte, N.C.

The accident occurred about 6:45 a.m. just past the traffic islands where highways 9 and 601 divide west of Pageland.

The S.C. Highway Patrol reports an SUV failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign on Dudley Road and pulled out in front of a west-bound dump truck, then was struck by an east-bound dump truck.

The first truck overturned, while the SUV and second dump truck caught fire.

High Point, Lanes Creek, N.C., Pageland and Sandhill fire departments, as well as Pageland Rescue, responded to the accident. The S.C. Highway Patrol and Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office were also present.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and Department of Transportation are evaluating the scene for environmental and highway safety.

The intersection continues to be blocked, and detours are in place.

More information will be posted to Breaking News as details become available.
