County prepares for possible storm effects

Officials in Chesterfield County have taken two actions in preparation for possible storm effects.

School closing

Chesterfield County School District will be closed Thursday, Sept. 5.

All after-school activities and practices are also cancelled for Thursday, Sept. 5.

CCSD Superintendent Dr. Harrison Goodwin said in a statement to MyFM 93.9 WCRE / 1420 WCRE-AM the State Department of Education does not allow buses to be on the road if winds are higher than 30 mph, and winds at that level may affect the eastern part of the county, including McBee and Cheraw.

Goodwin added a decision about Friday classes and after-school activities will be made Thursday afternoon.

County council declares state of emergency

Due to the forecast effects of Hurricane Dorian, Chesterfield County Council unanimously approved a resolution declaring a state of emergency in Chesterfield County effective 9:25 a.m. today Sept. 4, when it passed during the council meeting.

Council decided County Administrator Tim Eubanks, “in cooperation with law enforcement officials, Emergency Management and such other federal, state and local personnel as he deems appropriate, is authorized and directed to take such actions as are necessary to carry out the terms of this resolution, including, but not limited to, declaring a curfew, and directing and /or redirecting personnel of functions of county departments and agencies for purposes of facilitating or performing such services as may be required so long as this state of emergency exists.”

More information will be posted to Breaking News as details become available.
